Compassion Ministry

Therefore, encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

Compassion Ministry

The Compassion Ministry of Santa Barbara Community Church began out of a desire to provide structure for how we care for our church Body, especially in times of need or crisis.

Our purpose has been two-fold: First, our aim is to never supplant the role of a homegroup in caring for one of its members.  Rather, we endeavor to help equip that homegroup to care for one of their own and, when appropriate, provide assistance as needed. Secondly, we exist to provide care for those who are not in a home-group but are part of our church Body.

The Compassion Ministry has focused on three main areas: practical assistance; relationship; and allowing space within Body life for those who have suffered loss.

PRACTICAL ASSISTANCE
As a resource, we have compiled a list of practical needs (every-thing from meals, childcare, driving to appts., etc) and have solicited the names of those who feel they could contribute to given areas of desired help.

COMPANIONSHIP FOR SPECIFIC AREAS OF LOSS/CHALLENGE
In addition to addressing practical needs, we also want to offer spiritual and emotional comfort to those who are experiencing difficult life circumstances.  Toward that end, we have gathered a list of situations that might call for that kind of support (eg., death of a loved one, divorce, miscarriage, loss of health.)  Again, this list has been filled by various people who have had similar experiences and would be willing to come alongside one who is currently suffering.

CREATING SPACE WITHIN CHURCH LIFE FOR THOSE WHO SUFFER LOSS
We acknowledge that the life and energy of weekly church life is often difficult for those who have recently suffered loss.  The Bible calls us to rejoice, but is also replete with examples of worshippers who lament.  Our desire is to provide a venue for worship that addresses our sorrow and God's promise of hope.  We have established twice-yearly services we have called Strength & Consolation. These are evenings of Scripture, worship, music and prayer teams.
